Avernum is a prison. It's a enormous warren of tunnels and caverns, far below the surface world. you were banished their by the cruel Empire, to spend the rest of your life in the underworld. At first it seemed that you and your many fellow prisioners might be able to form a nation and live in peace, far from the sun.
The a group of adventurers from Avernum assissinated the King of the Empire. Now Empire forces are rampaging through your underground home, killing every one they find. As things stand Avernum and all that lives in it, is doomed.
But then you, soliders stationed at the most remote of forts, get a chance to change things. A series of unexpected events gives you a chance to explore unimagned relms, meet strange alien creatures, and maybe with luck , save your people from doom.
Avernum, It's a terrible place, but it's all you have.
